ABOUT 50,000 cats and dogs are euthanised in NSW annually so Dubbo-based lawyer for Companion Animals, Anne Greenaway, is demanding more pets to be desexed and is calling for backyard breeders to be licensed and regulated. She said the kill rate could be reduced by breeders and pet owners desexing their litters.“People don’t appreciate the connection between backyard breeding and not desexing their animals and the high animal euthanasia rates,’’ she said.“Go check out some of the local noticeboards around town – there’s a never-ending supply of dogs and cats for sale – or free to good home.“Too many cats and dogs are seen as disposable commodities that can be thrown away when the puppy or kitten phase is over, rather than a commitment for the life of the animal.”

The Dubbo City Council’s 2011 figures (January to December) reveal 225 cats and 41 dogs were killed at the Dubbo City Animal Shelter.

The combined NSW RSPCAs saw 13,031 cats and 8209 dogs killed. The rest of the euthanised animals came from other (council) pounds and shelters within the state.

She said people mistakenly believed that if animals end up at the pound the RSPCA will find them a good home, which was not always the case.

Ms Greenaway said the RSPCA pounds and shelters are burdened with an unnecessary excess with the shame laying squarely at the feet of irresponsible owners and unethical breeders.

The lawyer said she believed breeders who do not desex their animals fall into three categories- ethical purebred breeders who are selective about who they supply to, puppy farmers who do not care what happens to the animals after they have made a quick buck and those “who probably do care” but are not seeing the long-term effects of the breeding cycle they perpetuate.

By Emma Younger

Posted January 21, 2012 19:30:44

Animal welfare groups are calling on the Government to stop the live export of Australian greyhounds to Macau, as the territory has no animal protection laws and the dogs are routinely euthanased.

Australia is the largest supplier of dogs to the Chinese special administrative region, which is the only part of China where greyhound racing is legal.

Hundreds of Australian-bred greyhounds are sent each year, and now an international alliance of NGOs has written a letter to Prime Minister Julia Gillard claiming that every greyhound sent from Australia to Macau’s Canidrome race track is killed within three years of arriving.

Animals Asia director Ann Lloyd-Jones says animals should not be sent to places like Macau where there are no animal protection laws.

“We need to make a stand that it’s not acceptable for us to allow these dogs to go to a country where we have no control over their fate,” she said.

“They face endless confinement, they often suffer serious injuries when racing, and of course when they’re no longer profitable … they’re given a lethal injection.”

Ms Lloyd-Jones said she was concerned the trade would increase, with plans to expand greyhound racing into mainland China.

The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said Australia supported the efforts of governments in other countries to improve animal welfare.

In other countries, retired racing dogs can be adopted as pets, but every greyhound at Macau’s Canidrome race track is eventually euthanased.

The race track owners do not allow dogs to be adopted locally, and sending the greyhounds overseas is a lengthy and expensive process due to quarantine restrictions.

Grey2K USA, an American group that campaigns to end greyhound racing internationally, is lobbying to have one of the dogs in Macau sent back to Australia as a test case for international adoption.

The track owners have ignored the organisation’s letters.

But Grey2K USA’s executive director Carey Theil said the campaign provided an opportunity to begin discussing solutions.

“There’s no question that a creative solution can be found, whether that’s halting the export of dogs from Australia to Macau to begin with, or whether it’s the track owning up and taking responsibility for these dogs and sending them home to Australia to be re-homed,” he said.

Animal rights groups in Macau said the poor treatment of greyhounds was just one example of animal cruelty in the territory.

They are campaigning for the introduction of animal welfare laws to protect all animals, including greyhounds.

The territory’s first animal welfare bill was drafted in 2007 but has been put on hold.

Veterinarian Teresa Freitas worked for Macau’s animal control department and helped draft the law.

Now she organises the Concern for Animal Walk, an annual rally to demand legislation for the protection of animals.

Ms Freitas said the lack of laws means people do not take responsibility for vaccinating or caring for their dogs properly.

She believes it would not be viable to re-home greyhounds locally as a large number of abandoned dogs are already euthanased at the council’s kennel each month.

Activists like Ms Freitas have vowed to continue their campaign to get the Macau authorities to wind down greyhound racing and deal with animal cruelty.

“I really hope that something will change and if nothing changes every year we will get together again, we will gather the people to fight for the law to protect animals in Macau,” she said.

A greyhound trainer who pumped his dog full of Viagra to make him ‘run his head off’ at unlicensed races has been banned from keeping dogs for life.

Anthony Gregory Fowler, from Stockton-on-Tees, also gave his greyhound cannabis to slow him down, allowing him to profit from wins when the dog was then given more favourable odds.

The 61-year-old was affecting odds at unlicensed race meetings, Hartlepool Magistrates Court heard.

The trainer told police in an interview he fed his greyhound Jake boiled cannabis when he wanted him to lose races.

When the odds were better and Fowler wanted Jake to win, he would feed him Viagra or a testosterone-based drug – then watch him ‘run his head off’.

John Ellwood, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said police interviewed Fowler last September after receiving reports he was involved in selling cannabis.

Mr Ellwood said: ‘He admitted in interview that he fed his greyhounds cannabis when he wanted them to lose races. He did so by boiling the cannabis.

When he wanted the dog to win the race he injected it with a drug which turns out to be nandrolone, which is a testosterone derivative.

Race fixing: Fowler would also give dogs cannabis to slow them so they would lose races, a court heard (File picture)

‘He explained that the nandrolone and travel sickness pills which he had would affect the way the dogs would run and in particular he showed the officer Viagra tablets which according to him make them “run their heads off”.’

A greyhound trainer fed his dogs Viagra to run faster

Fowler was interviewed by an RSPCA inspector at a later date but by this time Jake was dead.

He escaped jail for causing unnecessary suffering to Jake but was given an 18-week custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay £1,000 costs at £10 a week.

Mr Ellwood told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court that Fowler had Jake put down after he injured his shoulder at a race track.

The grandfather, from Stockton-on-Tees, previously admitted two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to Jake and two charges of administering drugs to a dog knowing it to be poisonous.

John Nixon, defending, said there was no evidence Jake suffered anything other than being lethargic after taking cannabis and pointed out that police sniffer dogs often ingest the drug.
